waltz: maybe just an idea... maybe it might become something.
With the icon work I've done for Got_It I feel much more competent designing these little buggers. I love the style of the Tango project but I've used their colours so much in my design work that I wanted a break and after seeing Sekky's awesome #dev icons - [link] - I felt I should co gnome-icon-theme and have a play.
The multimedia player icons are done for Rockbox, an open source firmware project. They're in need of some Tango-styled icons for their project so that's 'em so far. Yea, they should trickle into gnome-icon-theme-extras eventually also, so look out for 'em on your desktop.
Good question. Lacking native Inskcape on the Mac I haven’t touch icon design for a while—I’m looking forward getting a PC and sticking Ubuntu/Fedora/SUSE on it for Inkscape & GIMP.
I’ll probably revisit Waltz now that Jakub has simplified the workflow process for creating icons—I should really get off my butt and at least make a folders-only version of the set for those who want to use the folders ontop of gnome-icon-theme or tango-icon-theme…
That's some awesome stuff right there, I've always wanted to see further into how these things are made, it also reminds me (watching those videos) that I should get back onto linux myself actually. My computer setup is kind of messy at the moment as they are split apart desk wise making it difficult to just switch between computers seeing as whatever I want to do on linux I can do on Windows quickly because I'm already on it. Hopefully soon I can either dual boot or fix my desk arrangements, and I look forward to seeing some icons from you hehe.
Haha—so you can’t make any complaints chaps using Macs until you’re back on a *NIX box yourself.
I had a chat with some of the dudes from Imendio last week at GUADEC and Richard Hult kindly helped me build GTK+ natively on OS X. I then built GIMP 2.5-devel without issue—it’s now working natively. Richard says he’s going to try to build Inkscape—see how that goes.
I upgraded to XQuartz X11 Quartz 2.2.3 and GIMP and Inkscape are running quite smoothly via that. At least now I can ditch running these via VMWare.
One day I will understand how to build packages from scratch without using a package manager, one day there's absolutely tonnes and tonnes to know about Linux. I want to know it all but no, really, I just want to understand it some more...I will do hopefully if I ever use Linux again D:
Although I haven’t tried building packages or build scripts (or similar—there’s bound to be a package management system out there in one of the distributions that lies somewhere in between or something), I don’t think it’s that had. I think you can even pre-build Debian .deb packages with check-install instead of make install after you’ve configured and compiled your program—the benefit of which is it is added properly to your system via the Debian apt system meaning it’s easier to trace and remove later on (rather than trying to remember where you installed it, and removing files manually—which can be risky).
Coming back to the icons, I’ll definitely do some more work on Waltz. I want to move all the existing icons to Jakub’s new workflow (which I think is still being perfected and ironed out), and then I’ll go from there.
I feel haven't finished enough of them to make a release worth it. I've almost got all the folders pinned down though so I might package a set of those.
I'm glad you like them; I'll try and finish them sometime soon. (:

Thanks for asking.
