Segfault's new single: Excommunicate. All made-up of course. =]

This was actually initially done for my English class 'Power & Protest' as a creative response on the theme of censorship. At first I just thought of doing something hands-on with some newspapers and a dictator's/spin-doctor's tools of the trade in regards to newspapers (scalpel, pens, ...), but I found it too bothersome. I liked the idea of just messing with newspapers nonetheless; I didn't want hand in something too 'material'.

So I tried taking some shots with a digital camera. I was going to use vignetting lights and a few other special photography goodies from a mate currently studying at the CNMA at the ANU who would be doing most of the shooting but I ran out of time as the assessment piece was due before he could get the equipment. I still have the 'props' in case we do get around to it sometime down the track.

So then I figured I'd work with Inkscape and potrace (integrated in Inkscape: select an imported raster image and press Shift + Alt + B). In the end I even did some simple lyrics to fill the back page of the cover that would slip into the front of the CD case. System Of A Down and Rage Against the Machine were of course a massive influence. ♥

I've never made any music in my life (something I actually regret; definitely intend to learn a musical instrument before I leave this world; perhaps the guitar) so a) those lyrics are short and b) in the eyes of many probably only the meager start of something, but as always critique is welcome even on the few lines I wrote.

As for the CD art itself I wanted it to symbolise all the 'inappropriate' things and snippets that some dictator had removed from a newspaper pending print. So when you stick this baby into your CD player, press play you end up hearing all the things that you weren't supposed to ever get access to... at least that was the idea.

I think that's about it. The cliché goes 'a picture is worth a thousand words' and since I can't be bothered writing that much interpret what you will from the work. Above all, hope you like it.

PS. If you noticed the Magnatune and Creative Commons logos on the back, they've been added for a reason. Check them out. Oh, and if you're interested in music, ccMixter is the thing for you. =]

Just as the pretend singles album, licensed under a CC license.

This post is licensed under the Craptive Commons "horribly pointlessly restrictive" license version 2.0. You can read this post providing it's non-commercially, and that is all, the end. All rights reserved, suckerrrr!

My name is Ashley.
All rights would mean you couldn't download it, copy it onto a CD and whatnot. CC nc-nd-sa is for chaps who don't want a specific piece edited or used commercially but still recognise the importance of CC (ie. someone who makes something but also wants to make money out of selling the same creative work in a nice CD case for people to buy although they offer OGG downloads on their site...).

Bitch at the CC people mate if you still thinks it sucks.
